यस्यार्थस्तस्यमित्राणि यस्यार्थस्तस्य बांधवा:।

यस्यार्थ: स पुमांल्लोके यस्यार्थ: स च पण्डित: ।।


Yassyaarthsstrassyamittraani Yassyaarthasstasya Baandhavah |

Yassyarthah Sa Pumaamlloke Yassyaarthah Sa cha panditah ||


He who has money, also has many friends and relations - is also deemed a great man and a scholar.


While this aphorism of Chanakya is in direct contradiction with his earlier saying, in which he asserts that a great man is the one who doesn’t care for money, but for honour, this may be his way of comparing what ought to be, with what is in the reality.
